David and Pamela Theobold
by Andrea Griffith

Even on a 100-degree day, David and Pamela Theobold happily say they moved to North Carolina from Ohio for the weather. After renting a home off of Jones Ferry Road for a year, they chose to buy in The Villas in Potterstone in June.  “We looked pretty widely but settled in Potterstone because it felt comfortable and was very friendly,” says David. “The residents here are the best real estate agents – they invited us into their homes.

David, 62, is an electrical engineering consultant who works from home, while Pamela is a former real estate agent who is now a certified hoop dance instructor (You may have seen some emails from her about getting a Hoop Jam group together at the pool. She hopes to schedule another one in the fall.). Pamela, 59, took up hooping a couple of years ago to help reverse her osteoporosis – she found it to be successful not only for her physical health but also for her mind.  “It totally changes your life,” she says. “You can never get bored with it.”

Pamela learned to hoop by watching YouTube videos. When the couple moved to the area, Pamela was thrilled to meet some of her hooping heroes – many were featured in the online videos – in Carrboro, which has an active hooping community. She now teaches hooping classes at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA and the Chapel Hill Community Center.

David’s hobby is woodworking. He’s currently building a sailboat in the garage and is looking forward to taking the finished product out on Jordan Lake.

The couple, who has been married 35 years, has a new granddaughter – their only daughter and son-in-law followed them from Ohio and now live in Raleigh. After years of living in cities, they’re happily settling into a small town.  “It’s Mayberry,” says David. “That’s why we moved here. Everyone is just so nice.
